Lecturer keeps bombarding us question which related to intelligence today. Even I when read The Psychologist Magazine, which published by British Psychological Society (BPS), there is an article about intelligence again.
Many people think that intelligence is rated by the IQ test. If you score higher marks in the IQ test, means you are intelligent. Some people believe that smart is equal to intelligence. So which one is true and what do you think about intelligence? Is the child consider intelligent if he can play sports very well? Is the young girl consider intelligent if she just passed her grade 8 piano test? What and where is the standard line?
I felt so sad when I saw my friends sharing a picture which about a primary school teacher punished a child by asking the little boy to repeat writing "智障" with the Chinese Pin Yin and the meaning in the exercise book. The child's family, his mum (I guess), is complaining the teacher meant to insult her son. In fact, she offends that her son isn't mentally retarded, but slow learner. She even met up with the teacher and apologizes for her son's attitude in school. And pleased the teacher for giving chance and not to deduct discipline marks in order to allow the child to continue studying in the school. But the teacher never listens and never accepts her apology.
I understand that teachers might be frustrated on teaching and marking exercise books. But this is the job. Moreover, I think teachers should practicing "有教无类"'s principle. Treat everyone as the same. The school didn't give up for the child, neither the child himself nor his family. As a teacher should always play the role as teaching students patiently and understand special students' cases. I understand teacher might lost of passion on their job due to the circumstances. But, as long as you are in education field, you should be a good modelling. I'm not a teachers, I don't know the feeling of being a teacher. I know it is not easy, never easy. But what I would like to advise is, teachers should always aware of the threshold of punishing students.
On the other hand, being good parents is hard. Being a parent of a child which is a slow learner is much more difficult. I know some parents don't have the patient on teaching and guiding their child. Or maybe they think that they do not have the knowledge to educate the child. And so, they rely on teachers. Parents tend to find the best tuition center, a personal tutor to help their kids in academic, train and enlighten the kids. Tuition might be a good choice in short time, but what about in long run? Do parents need to get along with their child and understand their strength and weakness?
Being seen the kids nowadays going to tuition from day to night, from Monday to Saturday. Do the kids really improve in their academic? Do they able to complete their school work while going for so many tuition classes? Do they really need those tuition classes? Do parents listen to children's heart say?
Education, learning is not easy. But is can be fun and a wonderful process when you enjoy it.
Do paper works, academic results showed everything? Does score prove one's intelligence? The answer seems to be. Unlikely.
